A jury convicted Richard Satchwell of murdering his wife, Tina Satchwell, after deliberating for nine hours and 28 minutes over four days.
He was charged with murdering her at their address on Grattan Street, Youghal, Co Cork, on 20 March 2017. Gardaí found her skeletal remains beneath the stairwell of their home in October 2023, more than six years after he reported her missing on 24 March 2017.
The trial had originally been scheduled for Cork. In November 2024, defence counsel Brendan Grehan SC argued that media attention made it impossible to retain an impartial jury there. Gerardine Small SC, for the Director of Public Prosecutions, opposed a change of venue, saying the publicity was national and much of it had been generated by Satchwell.
Mr Justice Paul McDermott agreed to move the trial to Dublin because of the significant risk of an unfair trial. The proceedings were reported on 30 May 2025.
