This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Richard Satchwell has appealed his conviction for murdering his wife Tina Satchwell at their home in Youghal, Co Cork. A jury found him guilty on 30 May 2025, and Mr Justice Paul McDermott sentenced him to life in prison at the Central Criminal Court on 4 June.

Satchwell had pleaded not guilty to murdering Tina Satchwell at Grattan Street between 19 and 20 March 2017. The proceedings were reported on 15 May 2025.

Her remains were found beneath the stairs of the couple’s home in October 2023, more than six years after Satchwell reported her missing. He initially claimed she had left him. After her remains were found, he said she had attacked him with a chisel and went limp after he held the belt of her dressing gown to her neck to protect himself.

The defence argued there was no evidence of an intent to kill or cause serious injury and said Satchwell had lied out of panic and shame. The jury returned a unanimous murder verdict.

His legal team lodged a notice of appeal on the day of sentencing, and it was formalised on 18 August 2025. On 25 August, the Irish Examiner reported that no appeal grounds had yet been lodged and that the team might seek priority for a hearing. A separate Irish Independent report that day said he was appealing on six grounds.
