Niall Byrne withdraws appeal against 10-year sentence for role in tiger kidnapping robbery

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Niall Byrne withdrew his appeal against the 10-year sentence imposed for his role as the inside man in a €2.08 million cash-in-transit robbery involving the kidnapping of a Dublin family. The Court of Appeal accepted the withdrawal after warning that it could increase as well as reduce his sentence.

Byrne had been convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery after working for Securicor, but the jury could not agree on the kidnapping charges against him. The court noted his conviction status as it considered the sentence appeal.

The withdrawal came after the Court of Appeal had dismissed appeals against the gang’s convictions earlier in 2020. Byrne’s appeal argued that the sentencing judge had not given sufficient weight to the impact of the lengthy legal process on him.
