Michael Cummins gets four-year sentence for false imprisonment

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Michael Cummins received a four-year sentence, with the final two years suspended, for false imprisonment at the Court of Appeal on 20 December 2018. The original sentence was imposed at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 27 February 2018.

The Court of Appeal allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions’ review after finding that too much weight had been given to mitigation and that the sentence did not reflect the seriousness of the offence.

The suspended portion was subject to a peace bond, supervision by the Probation and Welfare Service, and participation in directed drug-treatment courses. The appeal concerned a sentence imposed after Cummins pleaded guilty to theft, burglary, threatening to cause serious harm, false imprisonment and assault; the other offences were taken into consideration.
