Liam Campbell extradition approved over weapons trafficking charges

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Liam Campbell’s extradition to Lithuania was approved by the High Court in a judgment returned on 26 June 2020, over charges including weapons trafficking, firearms possession and terrorism. The court said an order for his surrender could be made, subject to a formal order when he appeared on 13 July.

Campbell had challenged the surrender over alleged delays, prison conditions and concerns about the independence of Lithuania’s prosecutor. The European Court of Justice had found that Lithuania’s Prosecutor General could qualify as a judicial authority capable of issuing European Arrest Warrants, subject to effective judicial protection.
