Lisa Smith loses appeal against Islamic State membership conviction

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Lisa Smith’s Islamic State membership conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal in its judgment delivered on 6 October 2026.

The court rejected all grounds of her appeal, finding that proof of combat, fundraising or other operational acts was not required to establish membership.

It said her deliberate travel to Islamic State territory, allegiance to its project and submission to its authority were critical circumstances in the case.

Smith, from Dundalk, had been convicted by the Special Criminal Court in 2022 after travelling to Syria in 2015; she had pleaded not guilty.
