Graham Shannon jailed for arson after appeal

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Graham Shannon was sentenced to a total of ten years, with the final year suspended, by the Court of Appeal, reported on 19 December 2023. The arson attacks targeted three cars and an auto body repair garage in Wexford in December 2018.

The court replaced the original concurrent sentences after finding them substantially unduly lenient. It set four years for the three vehicle arsons, to run concurrently, and six years for the garage arson, consecutive to those terms.

The garage fire caused more than €220,000 in damage, and the owner could not recover the full amount from insurance because it was a deliberate act. The court said it suspended the final year in the interests of Shannon’s rehabilitation and backdated the sentence to 7 April 2022.
