This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Central Criminal Court sentenced Muhammed al-Shaker al-Tamimi to life in prison for murdering his eight-year-old daughter, Malika al-Katib. Mr Justice Paul McDermott also imposed a consecutive 10-year sentence for the attempted murder of Aisha al-Katib, which he is to serve before the life sentence begins.

The court heard that Ms al-Katib was stabbed and left unable to move during the attack. Malika ran downstairs and urged her father to stop, before he turned the knife on her. At sentencing, the judge cited the extraordinary violence and the fact that the child was killed in front of her mother when imposing consecutive sentences.

Ms al-Katib told the court that the loss of her daughter and her inability to save her continued to affect her.
