Graham McGuinness was jailed for causing serious harm at the Central Criminal Court on 23 October 2024, receiving seven and a half years with the final 12 months suspended.
The offence followed an attack near Busáras and Store Street in Dublin on 11 June 2020, when McGuinness repeatedly slashed Martin Reilly with a handmade blade.
The court heard that Mr Reilly suffered multiple wounds, including a facial gash that exposed his jawbone, and was left with permanent scarring.
In setting sentence, Ms Justice Karen O’Connor cited the attack’s viciousness, duration and public location as aggravating factors. She also considered McGuinness’s guilty plea, remorse and difficult upbringing in mitigation.
The charge of producing a weapon was taken into consideration. The sentence was backdated to 12 May 2023, and the suspended period carries conditions including keeping the peace, attending probation appointments and addressing his drug addiction.
