A Kildare man was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to three years and 10 months in prison, with the final 10 months suspended, for assault causing harm. The proceedings were reported on 23 October 2024.

The 27-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was convicted in July of assault causing harm and criminal damage at an address in Co Dublin in December 2022. The jury found him not guilty of false imprisonment and production of an article capable of causing serious harm. It could not reach verdicts on charges of rape and making threats to kill or cause serious harm. The Director of Public Prosecutions entered nolle prosequis on those two charges, dropping them.

Ms Justice Melanie Greally said the offence was premeditated and a significant breach of trust. She noted that the man committed it while on a probation bond for a previous assault causing harm conviction. The suspended portion of his sentence was subject to conditions including no direct or indirect contact with the woman or her family indefinitely, engagement with the Probation Service for 12 months, and undertaking suitable courses, including an intimate partner violence programme.
