Long-awaited Navan playground and park plans unveiled – ‘We have waited nearly seven years for this day’

A long-awaited community park development in Navan has moved a step closer, with a public consultation process now open on proposed amenities at Dunville Community Park in Johnstown.
Meath County Council has published plans for a wide-ranging recreational development at Alexander Reid Road, including a café building, public toilets, play areas, sports facilities and landscaped green spaces.
The proposal, brought forward under Part 8 of the planning regulations, outlines a multi-use community park featuring a five-a-side all-weather pitch, a 3x3 basketball court, a sensory garden, flexible event space and natural play areas integrated into planting schemes.
Additional elements include an open lawn, outdoor seating, landform features and a pedestrian link through the park to a nearby school.
Aontú Navan councillor Emer Tóibín said the project represents a major opportunity to enhance facilities for residents, particularly younger people.
“We have waited nearly seven years for this day, when the Johnstown community can finally see the plans for the proposed playground and amenities,” she said.
“The plans under consideration include a new playground, upgraded green space, an all-weather pitch, teen areas, walking routes and seating.”
“This is a really important opportunity for local residents to have their say before final designs are agreed. Feedback provided during this stage can help shape the final layout and features of the development,” she added.
Members of the public can view the plans at council offices in Navan or online. The consultation period runs until May 29 for public inspection, with submissions accepted until June 15.
Meanwhile, any person may also apply to An Coimisiún Pleanála within four weeks for a screening determination on whether the project is likely to have significant environmental effects.
