Friends of the Irish Environment granted leave in legal aid challenge

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Friends of the Irish Environment was granted leave by Mr Justice Charles Meenan in the High Court to judicially review a Legal Aid Board decision. The proceedings were reported on 28 March 2019.

The board had refused to consider funding for the group’s legal challenge to the Government’s National Development Plan and National Planning Framework, part of Project Ireland 2040. The group says the plans were not properly assessed for environmental effects, including climate-change impact, and argues that legal aid should be available to it.
