In 1997, the Labour Court recommended phased pay increases in a dispute between The Electrical Contractors' Association and the Technical, Engineering And Electrical Union. The Court found that a 1994 agreement provided for a review of basic rates, with any increase to take effect from 1 January 1997. It recommended increases of £14.50 from 1 January 1997, £10 from 1 December 1997 and £8.52 from 1 September 1998. The parties were to agree how to pay the retrospective element. The £5 meal and tool allowance due from 1 July 1997 was to be paid separately. The recommendation was dated 5 June 1997.
