The Labour Court recommended €8,000 compensation for distress after an assault at work, alongside payments for the worker’s 12-week absence and medical costs. The recommendation, signed on 4 September 2023, arose from a dispute involving Sjog North East and a worker represented by the Psychiatric Nurses Association.

The employer acknowledged delays in discussing the Serious Physical Assault Scheme and that it had not issued an outcome on the worker’s grievance. The Court recommended that the scheme cover her absence and that her weekly pay be calculated using her average in the 13 weeks before she was absent.

The recommended payments included €3,934.60 gross for the absence, after applicable Social Welfare deductions, €90 for GP-related expenditure and €720 for medical costs. The Court said the terms should settle all issues in dispute in full and final.
