The Labour Court recommended that Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, the Department and THEA offer affected staff the electronic attendance-recording terms accepted by most staff in the Institute of Technology sector. The system would start once the equipment was installed and commissioned at GMIT. The dispute concerned an outstanding 2.5% increase under the Towards 2016 Agreement. The union said the technical staff had complied with the agreement and attendance-recording measures requested by management; the employer said the Department had not authorised payment and the Institute had no authority over pay. The Court noted the staff’s compliance, but said payment sanction had not come from the Department. It recommended that, if the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union notified acceptance for the claimants, the Institute pay the increase from the date full cooperation with attendance recording was in evidence. The recommendation was signed on 14 February 2017.
