The Labour Court recommended an independent review of a university lecturer’s unsuccessful application for promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer. The recommendation was signed on 7 December 2016. The worker, represented by SIPTU, had exhausted the university’s appeals process after a second unsuccessful application. The university and the worker agreed that a dispute about an appeal outcome could include a review of the promotions committee’s original decision. Professor Joyce O’Connor was asked to assess the reasons for refusal against the written application and promotion criteria. The university was to pay her reasonable fees. She was to report by 14 February 2017, after which the Court said it would issue a further recommendation.
