The WRC ordered a secondary school to pay a caretaker €6,000 compensation after finding that he had not received his statutory annual leave entitlements. The decision was dated 7 December 2016. The caretaker, who had worked an average of 24 hours a week since 2004, said he had received no holiday pay. The school said it had added 8% to his pay for annual leave and was committed to providing the required leave. The adjudication officer found that annual leave is for rest and recreation and its value cannot be built into wages. The school was required to comply with the statutory leave and pay rules. A second complaint received no separate award because compensation had been dealt with under the first complaint.
