Labour Court recommends Smurfit Kappa Dublin honour pay agreement

The Labour Court recommended on 16 June 2014 that Smurfit Kappa Dublin implement its pay agreement with Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union, and Unite the Union. The dispute arose after the company said it could no longer pay the agreed increase, while the unions sought full implementation. The Court found that circumstances had changed but did not justify setting aside the agreement. The company cited a fall of more than 18% in plant volumes since 2008; the unions said members had deferred pay expectations in return for guarantees, including a 2% increase due on 1 January 2014.
