The Labour Court recommended that John Paul Construction improve its redundancy offer to two weeks’ pay per year of service, capped at €600 a week, plus statutory terms. It recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept the offer, on the understanding that it would not set a precedent in the construction industry. The recommendation was signed on 17 June 2010. The dispute also concerned recall rights for workers made redundant. The Court recommended that the union accept the company’s position on recall. The union had sought enhanced redundancy terms and that suitable work arising within 12 months be offered to former employees. The company cited a downturn in activity and said it already paid statutory entitlements, notice pay and two extra weeks’ pay to workers seeking redundancy.
