Labour Court rejects nurses’ union claims over sick leave, allowance and compensation

The Labour Court did not recommend concession of the Irish Nurses Organisation’s claims against HSE Dublin North East over sick-leave discounting, a specialist allowance and compensation for three nurses who worked at Cavan General Hospital. The recommendation was signed on 28 September 2009.

The union said management’s failures to respond to complaints caused the nurses’ sick leave and stress. Management said it had engaged with them and that the allowance had been continued only until mediation ended.

The Court noted that independent investigators concluded the nurses had not been bullied, while finding serious deficiencies in management’s handling of their complaints. It said a better response would not have avoided the conflict and did not recommend concession of the claims.
