Labour Court recommends talks on UCC tutors’ sessions after proposed 23% reduction

By Fionn Kelly

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court recommended that University College Cork and the Irish Dental Association) discuss proposed changes to part-time clinical teachers’ working sessions, after the association objected to a proposed reduction of 23% below the 2007/08 level. The recommendation was signed on 3 July 2009, with discussions to finish by 31 July. The dispute concerned about 26 tutors at the Cork University Dental School and Hospital. The IDA said the proposals were disproportionate and noted that some tutors relied on the work as their sole income. The university said the school and hospital was in debt and that sessions had to be reduced by 830 below the 2007/08 level. The Court considered that management could vary session numbers under the 2002 contracts. It also recommended written confirmation of management’s position on recruitment practices.
