In 2009, the Labour Court did not recommend that Tesco Ireland Limited concede the Independent Workers Union (Iwu)’s pay claim. The recommendation was signed on 2 July 2009. The claim concerned rates and conditions for five butchers at Tesco stores in Wilton and Douglas, Cork, in line with arrangements negotiated by Cork butchers’ organisations. The union argued the butchers should be able to catch up with other trades; Tesco said the claim was outside national wage agreements and could have wider cost implications. The Court said those agreements were the appropriate means of adjusting the company’s wage rates and that the claim was cost-increasing and outside them.
