In 2008, the Labour Court recommended immediate talks between Cork Port Facilities Company Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union on the company's modernisation proposal, with discussions to last no more than six weeks. The union raised concerns over potential income and job losses for dockers, as well as work practices and pension rights; the company said existing arrangements inhibited investment and had stalled its plans. The recommendation was signed on 5 February 2008.
