The Labour Court recommended that Dublin Stevedores Ltd, the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the Marine Port and General Workers Union honour their agreement on staffing for ship discharges in Dublin Port, unless they voluntarily renegotiated it. The recommendation was dated 18 April 2006. The unions sought lost earnings for workers after a temporary arrangement reduced the agreed staffing from nine to two. Dublin Stevedores said it could not sustain the cost of paying nine employees while it was prevented from interfering with vessel operations, and disputed responsibility for the loss. The Court found the minimum-manning agreement remained valid and applied to the circumstances.
