The Labour Court recommended a three-month trial of Coillte’s new tree-planting system, with the effects on working conditions, safety and piece-rate earnings assessed. It also recommended protective earnings for workers during the trial. The dispute involved about 450 workers, including 300 paid by piece rate. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union (SIPTU) sought water for decontamination, huts at planting sites and an improved piece rate. Coillte offered water at most sites, protective clothing and a €5 increase per 1,000 pre-treated plants.
