In 2004, the Labour Court recommended that the Central Bank Of Ireland offer €7,000 to settle a worker’s grievance over a foreman promotion process. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union brought the claim on the worker’s behalf, seeking compensation for losses linked to non-promotion, overtime and a shift lead-in payment.

The worker applied with three colleagues for the foreman post in the Currency Section. None was successful, and the Bank said it would recruit externally. A Rights Commissioner had recommended appointing the candidate considered most suitable by the interview panel. The worker later took a position in another department, having been placed first at interview for the foreman role.

The Bank said the worker had not been recommended for promotion by local management and had been interviewed as a courtesy. It also said he had transferred voluntarily and offered €3,000 to settle the grievance. The Labour Court found he had a genuine grievance about how the Bank responded to the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation. On 27 September 2004, it recommended a €7,000 lump sum in full and final settlement.
