The Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union discuss the pay and working arrangements of engineering operatives at the Portlaoise Rail Sleeper Plant. The company proposed average 42-hour contracts; the union sought to preserve a pay differential and said the proposal could reduce earnings. In a recommendation dated 16 September 2004, the Court said it found no basis for accepting that an established differential existed between the grades. It recommended prioritising discussions within the wider shopworker group, agreeing an agenda and completing the process by the end of November 2004.
