In 2004, the Labour Court recommended a 2% payment for Meteor Mobile Communications call centre agents from 1 April 2004, followed by increases under the new national wage agreement from 1 July 2004. The recommendation covered about 60 agents.
The Communications Workers' Union had challenged a pay freeze and sought a formal pay review structure. Meteor said it used annual benchmarking and performance reviews to set pay. The Court said pay rates themselves were not before it and called the recommended wage adjustment a basic entitlement. It also found Meteor’s current overtime arrangement was consistent with company policy and general labour relations practice. The recommendation was dated 5 July 2004.
