The Labour Court recommended that Pierce Engineering offer a worker a £40,000 redundancy payment, inclusive of statutory entitlements. The recommendation was signed on 11 May 2001. The worker, a company management employee made redundant after being employed since 1984, sought enhanced compensation. The Court said the offer was inadequate given the worker's age, length of service, position and the compulsory nature of the redundancy. It said the recommendation would set no precedent for other redundancies.
