In 2000, the Labour Court recommended that Aer Lingus offer £1,000 to each second-year apprentice and £1,500 to each third-year apprentice to settle a dispute over lump-sum payments after a transfer. The recommendation was signed on 28 February 2000. The Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union brought the claim for 36 second- and third-year apprentice aircraft mechanics who were excluded from lump sums paid to other transferring employees. Aer Lingus said the issue had not been raised in transfer negotiations and that it had no obligation to pay the apprentices. The Court noted that some concessions had been made to the group without a satisfactory explanation and recommended the per-apprentice offers in full and final settlement.
