Labour Court recommends four section leader posts at John Player & Sons

In 2000, the Labour Court recommended that John Player & Sons offer four section leader posts on previously proposed terms to settle a dispute over lost promotion opportunities. The recommendation was signed on 28 February 2000. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said Project 97's reduction in foremen posts had curtailed promotion prospects for about 100 general operatives and argued the proposed allowance was inadequate. John Player & Sons said its proposed 15% differential exceeded £50 a week and that promotional opportunities had narrowed across the workforce. The Court recommended the four posts in full settlement of outstanding issues under the reorganisation agreement.
