Labour Court recommends delay to ambulance nurses’ licence requirement

The Labour Court recommended that the South Eastern Health Board defer full implementation of a Class D1 driving licence requirement for ambulance service nurses for up to 12 months. The recommendation was dated 22 October 1999. The Ino said the licence requirement was not included in a 1994 agreement. The Board said ambulances needed two crew members able to drive. The Court accepted that the licence was a new and onerous condition for nurses who had not previously been required to drive, and that the agreement had not addressed it. It recommended negotiations on redeployment at existing pay and conditions, or realistic severance terms, for nurses unable to obtain the licence.
