The Labour Court recommended improved redundancy terms for about 40 workers affected by the closure of Allegro Limited’s logistics operation. In its recommendation dated 22 October 1999, the Court said the redundancies were compulsory and advised that the company’s offer be accepted with changes. Allegro had offered three weeks’ pay per year of service, with a £30,000 ceiling and £500 per worker. The Marine, Port and General Workers’ Union sought six weeks’ pay per year plus statutory redundancy, without a ceiling. The Court recommended increasing the rate to four weeks’ pay per year of service and the ceiling to £35,000.
