The Labour Court recommended renewed talks over a pay claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for butchers employed by Tesco Ireland Limited in Dublin. Its recommendation was dated 20 October 1999. The union said central distribution and the introduction of the Lenards chicken range had increased the butchers’ workload. Tesco rejected a pay increase, saying distribution duties rested with butchery staff and preparation of the chicken was similar to other meat work. The Court recommended that the claim be included in resumed national talks on organisational change, alongside immediate separate talks on operational and workload problems and efforts to address their effects on the butchers.
