In 1998, the Labour Court recommended that Fan's Flowers pay Louise Reddy £500 in compensation after finding the manner of her dismissal unfair. The recommendation was dated 24 September 1998. Reddy was one of three florists employed from the shop’s opening until their dismissal on 6 May 1998. She said she had left another job believing the flower shop would be a long-term venture. The company said losses of more than £3,000 in its first month left it no choice but to cease trading. The Court said the business’s start-up difficulties did not excuse how Reddy was treated. She was not told of her dismissal before the shop closed and was later refused entry to collect her belongings, although the shop remained open. The company did not attend the hearing but provided a written submission.
