The Labour Court did not recommend the Seamen’s Union of Ireland’s claim for Irish Ferries Motormen to receive the £10 weekly increase paid to Able Seamen. The union argued Motormen handled or worked near hazardous cargo. The Court accepted that the increase for Able Seamen was partly for handling hazardous cargo and said the same circumstances did not apply to Motormen. The recommendation was dated 13 March 1998.
