In 1997, the Labour Court recommended a redundancy cap of £40,000 as Cahill May Roberts Limited planned to close three of its six branches and cut about 72 jobs. The recommendation was dated 22 December 1997. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought higher pay and improved compensation and redundancy terms. The Court recommended a basic rate of £6.30 an hour and 21 months’ compensation for loss of earnings, capped at £15,000. It recommended five weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory entitlement for redundancy, capped at £40,000, and five weeks’ pay per year of service for self-drive terms, with the cap remaining at £20,000. It recommended no change to the company’s early retirement and pension proposals.
