In 1997, the Labour Court recommended raising the compensation cap from £14,000 to £20,000 in a dispute between Cahill, May, Roberts Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union over earnings guarantees, forklift allowances, seniority and working hours. The recommendation was dated 22 December 1997. The union sought to protect workers’ lifetime earnings guarantees. The Court also recommended buying out six workers’ forklift allowances at twice their annual rate and ending them, and limiting seniority based job selection during absences to absences of a week or more. It recommended no change to the company’s hours proposals.
