Labour Court finds Irish Youth Hostel Association dismissal grossly unfair

By Fionn Kelly

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court found the Irish Youth Hostel Association’s dismissal of a worker grossly unfair and recommended compensation equal to three months’ salary, less the one month already paid. The recommendation was signed on 26 June 1997.

The worker said she was dismissed after repeatedly asking for a written contract. The Association said reservations had fallen and there was no longer enough work for her role. The Court criticised its failure to provide a promised contract and the sending of a dismissal letter without prior warning while the worker was on annual leave.

The worker was based at the Association’s hostel in Dublin. The recommended compensation was to be calculated from her salary, with the month already paid deducted.
