In 1997, the Labour Court clarified its recommendation in a dispute between Nestle Ireland Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The Court recommended that a former relief driver be facilitated with a position under the company’s TOPS voluntary redundancy programme. A replacement driver was to be selected and trained so the redundancy could be put in place by 31 October 1997. The Court said the other two drivers were not included for voluntary redundancy. It also recommended backup training in key areas to prevent workers with seniority being excluded from future redundancy programmes. The clarification was signed on 9 June 1997.
