In 1996, the Labour Court recommended no compensation for 13 security officers seeking payment for lost overtime at Sabrewatch Limited. The recommendation, dated 18 November 1996, said business fluctuations in the industry also affected individual earnings and found no grounds for compensation. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said overtime had been regular and rostered until the end of 1995, then was largely eliminated in the first half of 1996. It estimated a loss of about £70 per worker every fortnight. Sabrewatch said overtime was not guaranteed and varied with business needs; it also said overtime increased after a new store opened and average 1996 earnings had not fallen compared with 1995.
