In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that shop owner Denis Staunton provide a suitable reference for a former shop manager after a dispute over his dismissal. The Court accepted that the shop’s level of business could not support the level of employment. The worker said Staunton blamed him for a £50 cash shortfall and dismissed him. The employer cited missing lottery scratch cards worth £1,566, cash shortfalls and unchecked invoices. The worker denied responsibility for the cards and said he found £18 in over-registers and £30 in excess cash the following day. The recommendation was signed on 19 September 1996.
