The Labour Court recommended an interim weekly rate of £203.86 plus a 5% premium for evening-shift workers at Spring Grove (Ireland) Limited, in a recommendation dated 3 September 1996. It also recommended pension and sick-pay cover, with the position to be reviewed after 12 months. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the workers did the same machine-operating work as day-shift staff, who received £233.36 a week. The company said it was harmonising employment terms and that the Spencer rate was no longer justified by the work required.
