In 1996, the Labour Court did not recommend a shift premium for 25 Iarnrod Eireann catering workers at the CIE Club on Earl Place, Dublin. It found the claim was cost-increasing and could not be conceded under the Programme for Competitiveness and Work. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that other Iarnrod Eireann staff working similar hours received the premium. The company said the extra cost could affect its catering business, jobs and customer service. The recommendation was dated 19 June 1996.
