In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that Avonmore Foods PLC and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union begin meaningful negotiations on the proposed transfer of the company’s transport operation to Tankfreight. The recommendation, signed on 14 June, gave the parties six weeks to complete discussions covering all aspects of the operation. Avonmore said the transfer was needed to remain competitive and reduce transport costs. The union opposed it over concerns about job security and employment conditions, while saying it was willing to negotiate on the operation. The Court said the parties’ positions had prevented real discussions.
