The Labour Court recommended that the Central Bank of Ireland, the Amalgamated Transport & General Workers' Union and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union begin immediate discussions on portering work organisation and staffing levels. If they could not agree within a month, outside assistance should be used. Normal working should resume in the meantime. The recommendation was dated 27 May 1996. The bank said a review showed that a maximum of eight porters was needed; the unions sought nine permanent porters and said two promised replacements had not been hired. Porters had partially withdrawn services during the dispute.
