The Labour Court recommended improved severance terms for catering staff at St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, after the College decided to contract out its catering. The recommendation was signed on 24 April 1996. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought six weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory redundancy entitlements. The College said its offer of two weeks’ pay per year, plus statutory entitlements and capped at 18 weeks, was the best it could provide. The Court recommended four weeks’ pay per year, including statutory redundancy, capped at 26 weeks for Categories A and B and 78 weeks for Category C. It also recommended efforts to relocate employees where feasible and further local talks on added pension years for those choosing early retirement.
