In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that Ciba Geigy agree an area where a sales representative could live from Monday to Friday while working in a new sales territory in Laois/Carlow. The recommendation was signed on 19 June 1995. The worker had been based at home in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim. Ciba Geigy said sales representatives were required to live in their sales areas; the Sales Marketing and Administrative Union of Ireland argued that the proposed territory was not viable and that the worker could become surplus to requirements. The Court accepted the company’s right to set regional boundaries to match its market, but recommended weekday residence in an area agreed with the worker, with him starting on Monday and finishing on Friday as if he lived there.
