Labour Court declines litter wardens' officer-status claim

In 1995, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Irish Municipal Public And Civil Trade Union's claim for officer status for six litter wardens employed by Fingal, South Dublin, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Councils. The recommendation was signed on 19 June 1995. The union argued the wardens' enforcement duties and legal responsibilities supported the claim. The councils said their duties had not significantly changed and differed from those of comparator grades. The Court said posts should ideally be assessed by their total job content rather than selected elements.
