In 1995, the Labour Court recommended longer higher-premium periods for workers transferred from night shift and six more months of grade protection. The recommendation was signed on 3 May 1995. Sola Adc Lenses and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union disputed compensation for lost shift premiums and how to handle grade changes after the company reorganised. The company's proposed premium periods were shorter, while the union sought higher compensation and said transferred workers should retain their rates. The Court recommended higher-premium periods ranging from five to 17 weeks based on time spent on shift. It also recommended red circling for all 12 employees for six months, after which the company's proposed phasing would take effect.
